Intern Q & A: Hunter Thompson

Meet Hunter Thompson, a college intern with Jackson EMC’s technical services department. Hunter is a senior at the University of Georgia, where he’s studying engineering. He has been an intern with Jackson EMC since May 2018.

We met with Hunter to get to know him and find out what it’s like to balance academics and an internship at Jackson EMC.

Q: Hunter, what do you like to do when you’re not busy with school or your internship?

A: I spend most of my free time with my fiancé and our puppy, a golden lab. Then, if I’m not busy studying, I enjoy playing intramural sports at UGA. I’ve played basketball, football and golf.

Q: My next question was dogs or cats, but I have a feeling I know the answer now.

A: Oh, definitely dogs. I actually don’t like cats. When I was younger a cat attacked me. I haven’t liked them since.

Q: Do you have any songs or artists you can’t stop listening to lately?

A: I don’t really listen to music from this generation. I’m into classic rock and bands like Led Zeppelin.

Q: How did you pick engineering as your major? Is it something you always saw yourself studying?

A: As a kid, I loved Iron Man, and he was an engineer. I think that sparked my love for it. I’ve always been interested in how things work, though. So, I’m not surprised that I ended up in engineering.

Q: Did you have a previous internship before applying here?

A: No, but I’ve worked about every job you can imagine, from life guarding to keeping score at the local recreation department. None of them even come close to how great this position is, though.

Q: What drew you to this position at Jackson EMC? Was there something unique that stood out about this specific internship in comparison to others?

A: I just knew it was a great company and that the people here are amazing. I graduated from Jefferson High School. Growing up in this community, you understand Jackson EMC’s reputation. I knew it would be a great place to work and learn. Plus, my grandpa worked for Georgia Power, so I was aware of the rare type of experience working at a utility company offers.

Q: How would you say your experience here has been so far?

A: Everyone here, specifically in Tech Services, is awesome. I’m learning so much about systems and maintenance on equipment.

Q: Can you breakdown what a day in the life of a Technical Services intern is like?

A: Honestly, one of the reasons why I chose engineering was because I knew I didn’t want to spend my entire life doing the same thing every day. And, as an intern here, everyday is different. One day I’m helping with phones or radios, and the next I’m working in the field. I love the variety.

Q: Now that you’ve been an intern at Jackson EMC for over a year, do you think you can pinpoint your favorite part about the job?

A: This isn’t necessarily one specific thing, but the people. Everyone at Jackson EMC is incredible. They’ve all encouraged me to learn. It’s remarkable to observe how everyone works as one cohesive unit to power members.

Q: What would you say to anyone considering applying for an internship here.

A: If you get the opportunity, jump at the chance to work here. It’s probably the greatest job you can have.
