Mother's Best Fried Green Tomatoes

A true southern favorite that never loses its appeal. The golden, crunchy crust and sharp flavor of the green tomatoes melts in your mouth. This is great as a side dish or served alone as a tasty summer snack.

  • 6 to 8 green tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup corn meal
  • salt (to taste)
  • pepper (to taste)
  • 1 cup oil

Mix flour, corn meal, salt and pepper in large bowl or brown paper bag. Wash and slice tomatoes. Mix tomatoes and flour mixture. Add tomatoes to hot oil, shaking off excess flour. Cook until golden brown on bottom. Keep turning tomatoes until all are brown. If you like, the tomatoes may be fried a few at a time in a deep fryer or you can fry them all at once in a large iron skillet. 4 to 6 servings
