Southern Buttermilk Fried Chicken
Awaken your taste buds with this traditional Southern favorite.
- 1 broiler-fryer chicken, cut into pieces (optional: lightly season to taste)
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. pepper
- vegetable oil
Place chicken in bowl. Pour buttermilk over chicken and marinate for at least 1 hour. Pour about an inch of oil in skillet and heat. In another bowl, mix flour, salt and pepper. Remove chicken from buttermilk. Roll pieces in flour. Cook until one side is browned; turn and brown other side, about 20 minutes total. Serve with mashed potatoes or rice.
